Session 3: WHAT JESUS DID ON THE CROSS

Colossians 2:14-15

“Having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it”

 INTRODUCTION

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God” (1 Corinthians 1:18)

The message of the cross is that of humility: Jesus, who is God, became man and died for us. It is a message of peace. Jesus came to unite people’s hearts- men and women, Jews and Gentiles, slaves and free people- and made them one. The message of the cross set us free from demonic bondages of fear, trauma and oppression.

REDEMPTION

Greek terms and meanings:

  • Agorazo - to buy in the marketplace (as in slaves)
  • Exagorazo - to buy and remove from the marketplace (no longer available for sale)
  • Lutroo - to loose (to free through the paying of a price)

These are the three things that Jesus did on the cross of Calvary.

 ·       He gave His life- paying the highest price by shedding His blood.

·       He bought us out of slavery of sin and released us into total freedom.

·       We were slaves to sin and were under its control.

·       God became man and took the accusations that our adversary raised against us and cancelled them on the cross of Calvary. His life was the price He paid for our redemption.

 AREAS OF REDEMPTION

Spiritual Area

Redemption is the only door that leads man to an intimate relationship with the Author of life. “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us ( for it is written, cursed is everyone who hangs on the tree)

Physical Area

Jesus delivers us from sickness which is a consequence of sin. “Who himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness- by those stripes you were healed”

Financial Area

Jesus delivers us from poverty, misery and financial curses.

“For you know that grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for our sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich”        ( 2 Cor 8:9)

The Cross: The only way to cancel the debt, the curse.

The first Adam failed and brought the curse. Jesus, the second Adam, had to live in holiness and bear the consequences of sin, taking all the punishment that mankind deserved. At Gethsemane, Jesus agonized in prayer when He saw everything that was coming His way. His mission was focused on the cross of Calvary.

 THE POWER OF THE CROSS

·       Jesus became Son of man that I may become a child of God (John 1:12)

·       Jesus became sin that I may become the righteousness of God

(2 Corinthians 5:21)

·       Jesus took on the curse so that I may enjoy His blessings (Galatians 3:13)

·       Jesus took on sickness so that I may be healed (Isaiah 53:4-5)

·       Jesus became poor so that I may become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9)

·       Jesus died my death so that I may live His life (Galatians 2:20, 1 John 5:11-13)

·       Jesus laid down His life so that I may be victorious (Romans 8:37)

·       Jesus came to earth via natural birth so that we may enter the kingdom of God through a spiritual birth.

·       Jesus came to live in our home, the earth, so that we could live in His home-heaven.

·       Jesus clothed Himself as man so we can be clothed with the Spirit of God.

 CONCLUSION

We must apply the victory that we have through the cross of Calvary in all three areas: spiritual, physical and financial.
