Session 12 HIS LIFE OUR CHURCH

A. Introduction: WHAT is “CHURCH”?

The word “church” comes from the Greek word ekklesia which is defined as “an assembly” or “called-out ones.” The root meaning of “church” is not that of a building, but of people. It is not a place, it is people. The church is the body of Christ, of which He is the head

(see Ephesians 1:22-23).

The church is not a building or a denomination.

The Church is a Family! It is a family of believers in Jesus Christ.

His Life together with many other groups of churches around the world celebrate our belongingness to Christ and to each other.

B. Benefits of a Church Family

A Church Family HELPS ME Know my Purpose in life.

A Church Family CHALLENGES ME to Grow by Knowledge Biblical Principles to live by.

3. Baptism is an outward symbol of an inward reality- a genuine conversion.

4. Baptism is obedience to the command of Christ, following Christ’s example,

fulfilling all righteousness, separation by death from sin, identification with

Christ in His death, burial and resurrection, and association with Christ’s

BODY (the church).

Who may be baptized?

Session 10 THE HOLY SPIRIT

Who is the Holy Spirit?

Acts 19:2
ff (The Message)

“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believe? Did you take God into your mind only, or did you also embrace with your hearts? Did He get inside you?” “We’ve never even heard of that- A Holy Spirit? God within us?

Acts 19 (NIV)

While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."

Ignorance is not a bliss!

The Holy Spirit is a PERSON, not a thing.

  • He THINKS Acts 15:28
  • He SPEAKS  Acts 1:16
  • He GRIEVES Ephesians 4:30
  • He is an ENABLING Spirit

In the Old Testament, vocationally:

ARTISTIC gifts Exodus 31:3-5

LEADERSHIP

                    Sacred Numbers 11:24-25

Secular Judges 3:10, Judges 11:29, 1 Samuel 16:13

PROPHETIC Isaiah 61:1

In the New Testament, in addition to His enablement, the Holy Spirit comes to EMPOWER His people.

He began with the Son of God

Luke 1

35 The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

= Virgin Birth

Luke 3:16-17

16 John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

Jesus was the Divine and Holy One at Birth. He became the ANOINTED ONE at His BAPTISM. Thus, He is not only the Son of God but then becomes Jesus (the) CHRIST.

He CONTINUES with the Church.

Luke 24

49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."

The Holy Spirit comes to:

1. GUIDE the disciples into all truth.

John 16:13

2. GIVE power for FREEDOM

Romans 8:1-2 (NIV)

3. GIVE power for CHRISTLIKE LIVING

Galatians 5:16,22-23

GIVE power forMINISTRY

Luke 3:22

Luke 4:1 (NIV)

The power for ministry was for effective Witnessing

Signs & Wonders

A sign- POINTS to a destination

A wonder- PROMOTES an idea

- proclaim “the Kingdom of God is at hand”

Mark 16

17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well."

4. He GATHERS His own into a family.

Galatians 4:6-7

2 Corinthians 1:22

No one is BORN a Christian because of family lineage. We must be born into God’s family through the Holy Spirit.

 John 3

5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.7 You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.'8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."

What is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?

Some expression that mean the same thing:

“They were FILLED with the Holy Spirit”

Acts 2:4

“The Holy Spirit fell UPON them”

Acts 8:16

“The Holy Spirit had POURED upon them”

NLT Acts 19:6

THREE of the FIVE instances record specific manifestations of the Spirit in which the people themselves have participated:

They spoke in TOUNGES and PROPHESIED

Acts 2:4, Acts 10:45-47, Acts 19:6

To prophesy is to speak inspired words

The two other times, some type of MANIFESTATION occurred as well.

 Acts 8

17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money 19 and said, "Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit."

What is speaking in tongues?

It is speaking in a language FOREIGN to the speaker but sometimes familiar to the hearer.

It is a form of PRAYER1 Corinthians 14:14

It is a form of PRAYER that EDIFIES the speaker

1 Corinthians 14:4

It is a form of PRAYER that EDIFIES the speaker

Jude 1:20

It is a form of PRAYER that ENGAGES the Enemy

Ephesians 6:18

It is a form of PRAYER that ENABLES after we run out of our own words. Romans 8:26

It is a form of PRAISE1 Corinthians 14:15-16, Ephesians 5:18-19

Does the New Testament approve of in speaking in tongues?

1 Corinthians 14:39, 1 Corinthians 14:5

CONCLUSION

Even though the Holy Spirit is IN us when we are converted, the Bible tells us that we need Him to come UPON us.

How to receive the Holy Spirit

1. ATMOSPHERE of Surrender

Acknowledge-Purpose-Empowerment

2. BELIEVE His Word

Yield is an act of faith.

3. LONG for His gift

1 Corinthians 14 (NIV)

1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.

4. EXPECT

Not just for Super saints- It’s for You

Acts 2

38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off-- for all whom the Lord our God will call."
